Travelling around 295 kilometers south east from Colombo lies Tangalla. On Sri Lanka's southern cost, is this authentic fishing village, from where you can get a feel of an aspect of real Sri Lankan life. Even though Tangalla is close to the equator there is nothing south of it except the waters of the Indian Ocean and the Cold Antartica.
Tandalla is one of the most pleasant places in the region for a lazy beach holiday. It is one of the country’s most accessible and beautiful white sand costal strips. Tangalla is resolutely low-key compared to the resorts further west.
Other attractions around Tangalla is an excursion to the rock temples of Mulkirigala, the Hoo-maniya blowhole and the giant Buddha shrines of Wewurukannala. The nearby beach at Rekawa is the most popular site for turtle-watching. For bird watchers is the Kalametiya Bird Sanctuary.
The area around Tangalla is spoilt for a choice of accommodation and it is possible to stay in beach huts on stilts or in boutique guest houses. You could also rent opulent yet affordable inexpensive villas.
Tangalla is best visited between October and April when the climate is perfect for beach life.
