One of the most popular attractions of a holiday in Sri Lanka is a visit to the Pinnewala Elephant Orphanage.
Originally set up to care for five abandoned elephant calves over thirty years ago, it has evolved into one of Sri Lanka's premier tourist attractions, in a self-propagating project; as the animals matured and bred so too the number of visitors swelled. The animals usually roam around freely, but are looked after by the mahouts. If you were to arrive at the right time you could see the elephants having a very splashy bath. Visitors are permitted to bottle-feed the baby elephants.
No where else is it possible to get so close to so many pachyderm elephants. A day trip to Pinnewala is recomended and would be an ideal break if traveling between Kandy and Colombo by car. Alternatively hotel accommodation is available near the orphanage.
